About Niven Resources and Mac
Niven Resources was created by MacDonald Niven, MA, MCM, CCE as a way to study club issues and return to the leadership insights gained through the research. In 1989, after 12 years of restaurant management, Mac began his club career as the general manager of a small club in deep financial trouble: this job immediately required him to delve deeply into every operational area, to learn how to make hard operational-priority decisions, and to achieve goals with limited resources. He performed all the duties possible at a club from cooking in the pool snack bar to negotiating better terms with the bank. These efforts brought the club to a place of financial stability and growth. Since then, he has gone on to manage an upscale HOA club, a large multi-course club, and a Golf Digest Top 100 club. Most recently, he has had the privilege of helping a good club to become a Distinguished Emerald Club of the World.
In addition to his practical experience and BA in Finance from The University of Alabama, in 2016 Mac attained a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from UA. These studies have allowed Mac to learn and use cutting edge theories of management, motivation, and optimal training procedures. Through UA, Mac has completed 15 of 30 hours work in Marketing graduate studies with a focus on digital marketing. A product of this course is a paper specifically pertaining to club marketing, “Country Club Social Media Marketing,” which can be found on this web site within the Research Papers tab. Mac recently received certification in Diversity and Inclusion through Cornell University.
Mac received his Master Club Manager designation during the CMAA World Conference held in Orlando, Florida in February, 2017. His Monograph Fostering Strong Working Relationships Between the GM/COO and Club Directors is the result of years of research and study on the different governance processes used by clubs and summarizes best practices in creating collaboration between the GM and directors in order to provide the best club governance.
Through this research Group, Mac continually studies club management and all its complexities. With the help of over two hundred managers, this Group adds insight into real-time issues in club management.
